Pura Desa

Most Balinese families live in compounds that are comprised of many houses for an entire immediate and extended family. In each family compound, they have a mini temple to conduct ceremonies and offerings. But, each village has at least one main temple, or sometimes three, known as the Pura Desa (village temple). Some villages are fortunate to also have the Pura Puseh (temple of the village founders) and Pura Dalem (temple of the dead).

I’ve been diving in head first to the Hindu culture – it is so soulful, beautiful and remarkable. They are very in-tune with their innermost feelings and thoughts of those around them. And they believe in a perfect balance of good and evil: black and white (ying and yang in other cultures/religions), which is a smart and realistic way of thinking. My love affair with Bali has partly come about due to the Hindu culture. It is hard to put in words, but being surrounded by their energy and love, and witnessing the countless ceremonies and thrice daily offerings – it brings you to a peaceful place in your soul and heart.
